ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ SUFFERS MAJOR SETBACK FROM HER OWN TEAM

The Democratic Party in the House did not give Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the coveted seat that she had been vying for. The freshman representative with progressive plans did not get a place at the table in the powerful tax-writing committee where she sought to push her progressive agenda of Medicare for All, free college tuition and a green new deal.

The open downstate New York slot on the House Ways and Means Committee instead went to a moderate Democrat. It was given to Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi, a former CPA, attorney, and county executive.

The moderate Suozzi will now sit at the committee where Rep. Joe Crowley sat. He is the Queens Democrat Ocasio-Cortez defeated last year in an upset that left most surprised.

Ocasio-Cortez was vying for a spot on the committee, even though it is usually off limits to those new to the House. She had the backing of progressive groups that pushed for a slate of freshman candidates to earn some significant assignments.

Ocasio-Cortez was not the only new representative in this position. Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib made a play for the Appropriations Committee, but she too was passed over for another candidate.
Ocasio-Cortez is 29-years-old and is the youngest member of Congress. She seems to have taken the defeat in stride. When she was asked if she felt slighted by leadership, her spokesman Corbin Trent said: “certainly not.”

“She hoped to be on it, but we’re excited to see what committees she does get,” Trent said.

Why do you think Oasio-Cortez was denied this position? Do you agree with the Democratic Party? Do you think that she will eventually sit on that committee?

We look forward to seeing what you are thinking, please leave your comments at the end of this article.
